Online EMDR Therapy in California & Michigan

When past experiences still feel present, EMDR can help you find a way forward.

Sometimes it can feel like your reactions don’t quite match what’s happening in the moment; like something deeper is being activated before you have a chance to respond. You might find yourself overwhelmed, shutting down, or stuck in patterns that don’t feel like a choice.

It can feel like something in you is reacting before you have time to think; like your body and emotions are moving faster than your ability to make sense of what’s happening. Even when part of you knows you’re safe, another part doesn’t seem to get the message.

What is EMDR Therapy and can it help me?

You might notice that your reactions don't always match what's happening in the moment. Maybe something small sets off a big emotional response, maybe you find yourself shutting down, overthinking, or feeling overwhelmed without fully understanding why. Even when you know you're safe, another part of you responds to danger.

This is often how unprocessed experiences show up in us. The odds are that you went through an experience that felt overwhelming at the time and your brain did not have the chance to fully make sense of it. Instead, it stays stored in a way that can show up instantly in our emotions, bodies, and the patterns we find ourselves repeating.

Eye Movement Densensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based approach to working with these experiences. Rather than just talking about what happened, EMDR helps your brain process it in a different way, so it begins to feel less intense and less present. As this happens, many people notice they feel less reactive, more grounded, and more able to respond with choice instead of feeling pulled into the same patterns.

Our online therapy sessions are conveniently available for all California and Michigan residents.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

We begin by getting a clear sense of what's been happening for you.

Often, there are specific experiences or patterns that feel unresolved, even years or decades later. You may notice this in the way you move through the world: your emotions, your reactions, or the way you show up in relationships. Together, we'll identify what feels most important to focus on and begin building a foundation so the work feels steady and manageable.

Through EMDR, we'll focus on those experiences directly. You'll be guided to bring attention to aspects of a memory while your brain engages in a structured process that helps it work through what hasn't fully settled. Many people find that what once felt intense or just beneath the surface beings to feel less overwhelming and more distant.

Over time, this often shows up not just how you remember the past, but in how you experience your day-to-day life. Reactions that once felt automatic can begin to soften, and there's more space to respond with clarity and intention rather than feeling pulled into the same patterns.

FAQs About EMDR Therapy with Authentic Healing Therapy

  • Do I have to talk about everything in detail for EMDR to work?

    • No. While we may talk about aspects of your experiences, EMDR therapy does not require you to share every detail of what happened in order for the work to be effective. We move at a pace that feels manageable and supportive for you.

  • Can EMDR therapy be done virtually?

    • Yes. EMDR can be done effectively online using adapted forms of bilateral stimulation.

  • What kinds of issues can EMDR help with?

    • EMDR has been most researched for PTSD and trauma, but has also shown efficacy for anxiety, panic, overwhelming emotional reactions, self-esteem concerns, painful relationship patterns, and experiences that still feel unresolved or emotionally charged

  • What is I don't remember my past clearly?

    • That's completely okay. Many people don't remember everything clearly, especially when those experiences were overwhelming. EMDR does not require (nor expect) perfect memory in order to do meaningful work.

  • Will EMDR make me relive traumatic experiences?

    • EMDR can bring up emotions, memories, and body sensations connected to past experiences, but the goal is not to overwhelm you or force you to relive them. We'll work collaboratively at a pace that prioritizes safety throughout the process.

  • How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

    • You don't need to have it figured out before reaching out. During our consultation and early sessions, we'll discuss what's been going on and explore whether EMDR feels like a supportive fit for your goals and need.
